Chris Partap
My love for baking started when I was very young. Back then, I felt a bit left out, like I didn’t always belong. But that changed when my grandma came into my life. She showed me unconditional love, especially in the kitchen where I would sit and help her bake. It wasn't just fun. For me, baking was also therapeutic. It gave me a reason to not simply exist but to dream. I felt like I had a gift to give the world, and the sky was the limit.
My grandma could see how much I loved to bake. One day she said, “Chris, I want to pay for you to take an icing course.” She encouraged me to be the best I could be. She would stay up with me when I was making a wedding cake and keep me company until I finished. Then she’d look at me and kiss my forehead and say, “I’m so proud of you.”
My grandma is no longer with us, and sometimes I cry because I miss her so much. But then I go into the kitchen and bake—and it’s like she’s right there by my side again.
Ultimately, my story is not about baking. It’s about feeling loved and valued as a human being. I want the same love that my grandma gave me to emanate from my food to the people who enjoy it. I want them to know that they should never feel less than. Ever. I know that my grandma would want that for them, too.
